The Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran to Serbia, Mohamed Sadek Fazli, told RTS that Iran is currently governed by an interim council. He stated that a new Supreme Leader has not yet been chosen, but also that the Americans and Israelis are sabotaging that process by targeting locations they believe to be meeting sites. Iran’s nuclear activities are not of a military nature, the Iranian ambassador emphasized.
Mohamed Sadek Fazli says that “Iran and the Iranian people are in a state of defense.”
“Also, the Iranian people are in mourning due to the martyrdom killing of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Regardless of the fact that American and Israeli planes, drones, and missiles are attacking Iran, citizens are still on the streets today, in mosques, mourning the death of the Supreme Leader,” the Iranian ambassador points out.
Speaking about media reports that Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of the slain Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has been chosen as the new ayatollah and Supreme Leader of Iran, the Iranian ambassador to Serbia says that the election of a new Supreme Leader is a process stipulated by the Iranian constitution.
“Council meetings are ongoing, and within that council several names are being considered that are speculated to be potential candidates, but the council has not yet announced its decision, so there is no talk of a new name until they decide,” adds Sadek Fazli.
Who is now governing Iran
He also explains that, according to the Iranian constitution, following the death of the Supreme Leader, an interim council is formed.
“That council consists of the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran, the head of the judiciary of Iran, as well as a representative of the Guardian Council,” he adds.
He points out that this council is entrusted with the powers and duties, as well as the obligations of the Supreme Leader after his death, until a new Supreme Leader is appointed.
He emphasizes that, if one looks more closely at Iran’s political structure, it can be seen that “a system is functioning in Iran.”
“That means that the change or departure of an individual will not negatively affect the functioning of the system,” says Sadek Fazli.
When will a new Supreme Leader be chosen
Asked when a new ayatollah will be chosen, the Iranian ambassador states that the process will last several days.
“It turned out that, unfortunately, the Americans and Israelis insist that this process not take place. During yesterday they tried several times to bomb places where that meeting was supposed to be held or is presumed it would be held. This is proof of the malicious, dirty and false intentions of the United States of America,” emphasizes Sadek Fazli.
“We are facing major American lies”
Iran categorically rejects developing nuclear weapons and emphasizes that the reports of the International Atomic Energy Agency are clear. Washington, however, claims that the program is rapidly developing, that there were hidden sites, and that work was being done on developing nuclear weapons while negotiations were ongoing.
“First, we are faced with major American lies. In June 2025, the Americans bombed the negotiating table. Identically as a few days ago, when we were in the process of negotiations, they suddenly bombed the table,” says Sadek Fazli.
He also recalled an interview that U.S. President Donald Trump gave last year.
“He said that he had completely destroyed all of Iran’s nuclear facilities and prevented Iran from developing nuclear weapons. At that time he claimed that the nuclear threat from Iran had been eliminated. Even then we did not have any military nuclear activities. But Trump has one strategy that is very important for you to know – to repeat big lies multiple times so that they are more easily believed. Iran’s nuclear activities were in no way of a military nature, nor are they,” the Iranian ambassador says.
“Part of the big lies that we will use uranium to make a nuclear bomb”
Speaking about the statement of U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff, who referred to Iranian negotiators and said that the Iranians boasted they control 460 kilograms of 60 percent highly enriched uranium, which was enough to build 11 nuclear warheads.
“That Iran has enriched uranium, that may be a correct statement, but that we said we would use it to make a nuclear bomb, that is part of those same big lies,” emphasizes Sadek Fazli.
“I ask the Americans – did you claim last year that you hit the places where those 460 kilograms were stored and claim that it was over. You are claiming that again. We must ask whether you lied to the people then or now,” adds the Iranian ambassador.
He pointed out that attention should be paid to the statements of the Iranian foreign minister after the negotiations, as well as to the statements of the Omani foreign minister as mediator.
“Look at what both the foreign ministers of Iran and Oman are saying, and then what Mr. Witkoff is saying. Unfortunately, the situation is such that the Americans say whatever comes to their mind and no value or moral trait matters to them at all,” believes Sadek Fazli.
Is there a chance for diplomacy
He also underlines that Iran has repeatedly said that if attacked, it will respond by attacking American bases in the region.
“We have repeatedly stated that if an attack is carried out by the U.S. or the Zionist regime, we will attack all U.S. interests and American bases in the region. That was not something they can claim they did not know. Why American bases? The reason is very simple. First, those bases are the source of attacks against us. That means we respond by attacking the places that are the source and starting point of attacks on us. Second, these bases are considered the territory of the country that is attacking us. That means we are attacking the military and intelligence bases of the country attacking us and absolutely the attack is not on the territory of the country in which they are located,” says Sadek Fazli.
He also notes that they have never attacked residential buildings, nor will they do so.
“Our target is military bases and intelligence centers that operate against us. There is one very important fact here. Allow me to use one expression – these days we are facing what is called a false flag. Do you know what that means? Things have happened that are being attributed to Iran. You probably heard that yesterday both Qatar and Saudi Arabia announced that Mossad terrorist elements operated on the territory of those countries,” adds Sadek Fazli.
Asked whether diplomacy now has a chance, the Iranian ambassador replies that “Iran is a country against which aggression has been carried out.”
“Without a rational reason, we are the subject of aggression and attack by the U.S. and the Zionist regime. That means that the other side, the one that carried out the aggression, that is the U.S., must stop the attack,” notes Sadek Fazli.
Asked whether there is any diplomatic communication between the two sides, at least through intermediaries, the Iranian ambassador clearly states: “We will no longer negotiate with the Americans.”
