Police have surrounded a building in the center of Podgorica where businessman Aco Đukanović lives.

In the same building, in Vuka Karadžića Street, there is also a branch of Prva Banka, owned by Đukanović.

According to information from Vijesti, inspectors will search the property of Aco Đukanović.

Aco is the brother of former long-time Prime Minister and President of Montenegro Milo Đukanović and is considered one of the wealthiest people in Montenegro.

At the end of 2006, he purchased shares in Nikšićka Banka, which he renamed Prva Banka Crne Gore the following year, RTCG writes.

From the beginning of its operations until the Democratic Party of Socialists (DPS) was removed from power in August 2020, state-owned companies, numerous ministries and other institutions, local governments, as well as businessmen close to the then ruling party, held accounts and deposits in that bank.

An analysis of Prva Banka’s operations in 2012 was also conducted by the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP). Their reports mention a series of allegedly illegal activities by the bank, which, as stated, are described in detail in thousands of pages of confidential banking documents obtained by OCCRP.

According to the organization, those documents reveal corruption, greed and incompetence. It is also claimed that in concluding certain deals, the bank did not comply with the Law on the Prevention of Money Laundering, its own rules, nor standards of good banking practice.

One of the criminal complaints filed by MANS requested that the Special Prosecutor’s Office examine the operations of Prva Banka in connection with the approval of unusually favorable loans. Among them is a multi-million loan to Darko Šarić, who had been convicted in Serbia for drug trafficking.

OCCRP’s articles also state that Šarić was a “reliable client” for Prva Banka who, during the financial crisis, helped the bank by placing a multi-million deposit at a time when it was having difficulty executing the orders of its depositors.
