U.S. President Donald Trump stated that he will meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin, but added that the date for the meeting has not been set.
Trump, who assumed office on Monday, also said that he will try to end the war between Russia and Ukraine as soon as possible.
He made the statement to reporters while signing executive orders in the Oval Office, according to Reuters.
“I will meet with President Putin,” Trump said in response to questions from reporters about the possibility of such a meeting.
When asked how he plans to end the war in Ukraine, the U.S. president replied, “We’re working to do that as quickly as possible.”
Trump once again expressed the view that the war should never have started.
CNN reported yesterday, citing anonymous sources, that Trump instructed his aides to arrange a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin in the days following his oath of office, with the goal of scheduling a direct meeting in the coming months aimed at ending the war in Ukraine.

The sources indicated that officials from Trump’s national security team had begun working on arranging the phone call with Putin several weeks ago.
The network noted that it is unclear whether a date for the phone call has already been set.
Trump has not spoken directly with Putin for nearly three years.
During his campaign, Trump promised that he would end the conflict in Ukraine within one day after taking office.
