The driver M.P. (1987), who mowed down and carried a student on his hood during a protest at the intersection of Ruzveltova and Ulica kraljice Marije in Belgrade, and then fled, justified his insane act after his arrest by claiming that he was “hurrying to work”, and that he ran away because he was scared, as NIN found out.

“I was hurrying to work,” said M.P., who was driving a Ford car belonging to S.Ć.

M.P. has a criminal record and has been convicted of theft seven times in the past. The Higher Public Prosecutor’s Office, which took over the case, suspects him of the criminal offense of attempted aggravated murder. M.P. has been detained for 48 hours.

Minister of the Interior Ivica Dačić stated that the police reacted immediately.

“Within ten minutes, they found the vehicle that hit and knocked down a 20-year-old woman, which left the scene towards the Theology School, and five minutes later, they also found the driver of the Ford and two other people who were with him in the vehicle, one of whom was a minor,” said Dačić.

Dačić added that all passengers from the car were immediately brought to the police station, and the driver M. P. (1987) was arrested and detained and will be referred to the competent prosecutor for further proceedings, who qualified the criminal offense as attempted aggravated murder.

“The person suspected of committing this criminal offense has previously been recorded as the perpetrator of various criminal offenses and has been convicted seven times,” Dačić said and added:

“The Ministry of the Interior once again calls on everyone to respect the Law on Public Gatherings and the Law on Traffic Safety.”

The Higher Public Prosecutor’s Office in Belgrade announced that it had taken over the case against M. P. (36). The suspect is charged with attempted murder, or more specifically, the crime of “attempted aggravated murder”. He has been detained for 48 hours, during which time he will be questioned at the Higher Public Prosecutor’s Office in Belgrade.
