Belgrade, the whole of Serbia, and all of Europe now know the first finalist of the European Championship being held at the Belgrade Arena! In the first semifinal, tense and dramatic, Hungary defeated Greece 15:12, thus securing a place in the match for the gold medal!
We witnessed a true spectacle in Belgrade — it must be said that this really is the crème de la crème of European, and even world, water polo. Serbia was also eagerly awaiting this duel, so that the Dolphins could find out who they would face in a potential final, or in a possible match for third place.
A great deal was expected from the clash of two water polo powerhouses, and those who came to the Belgrade Arena did not regret it in the slightest, as they had the opportunity to watch a complete spectacle between these two national teams.
The Greeks played an excellent tournament, without a single slip-up, and they continued in the same fashion against Hungary. From the very start of the match, the Greek team was in the lead. During the first period they twice held a two-goal advantage.
It was 3:1, and then 5:3, but the Hungarians managed to equalize both times. The same pattern continued in the second period, as Greece constantly led. Each time, Hungary managed to draw level, before the turning point came in the third quarter.
The Hungarians went on a 3:0 run in this segment of the game, took an 11:8 lead after the break, and Greece suffered a huge drop in performance from which they never recovered.
Greece tried to respond and cut the deficit to 10:12, but that was all.
In the end, Hungary recorded a convincing victory.
The most efficient player for Hungary was Kristián Manhercz with four goals, Vendel Vigvári added three, while Ákos Nagy and Ádám Nagy scored two each. Goalkeeper Soma Vogel made nine saves from 21 shots on goal. For Greece, Konstantinos Kakaris stood out with three goals, while Argyropoulos and Skoumpakis scored two each. Greece’s goalkeeper Emmanouil Zerdevas had only three saves from 15 shots.
