A large explosion occurred in Tehran today, in a square filled with demonstrators, Iranian state television reported.
The explosion occurred at Ferdowsi Square, near University of Tehran, the epicenter of demonstrations marking Quds Day. Quds Day (literally “Jerusalem Day”) is an annual pro-Palestinian event held on the last Friday of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan to express support for Palestinians and oppose Israel and Zionism. The tradition was started by Ali Khamenei.

A video published by the agency Tasnim News Agency shows smoke rising as demonstrators chant āDeath to Israelā and āDeath to Americaā.
Iranian media report that one woman was killed in the explosion.

In Tehran and other cities many people gathered, despite ongoing American and Israeli attacks in the region during the commemoration, state media reported.

In addition, state media stated that several prominent political figures marched through Tehran, including the secretary of Iranās Supreme National Security Council Ali Larijani, the head of the Atomic Energy Organization Mohammad Eslami, the president of the Supreme Court Gholam-Hossein Mohseni-Eje’i and the police chief Ahmad-Reza Radan.

Larijani said that the āattack on the march routeā indicates the ādesperationā of Israel.

The cause of the explosion is not known. Israel warned just before the explosion that it could carry out an attack in that area.

Authorities in Tehran did not immediately release details about what happened. However, the site of the explosion appeared close to an area that Israel had previously indicated as a target.
Shortly before the attack in Tehran, an explosion shook the city of Qazvin, which Israel had also warned could be a target.
People also reported other strikes in Tehran at roughly the same time, although there is no available information about what was hit.
