An attacker dressed in black killed at least two people and wounded eight others at Brown University in Providence, in the U.S. state of Rhode Island, yesterday during final exams on the university campus, authorities reported while police are still searching for the suspect in the crime.

Police have been searching buildings across the campus, inspecting everything including trash bins, for more than three hours after the shooting.

The suspect is a man dressed in dark clothing who was last seen leaving the building housing the engineering departments, where the attack occurred, said Deputy Police Chief Timothy O’Hara.

Mayor Brett Smiley said a shelter-in-place order is in effect in that part of the city, and residents living near the campus have been urged to remain in their apartments and homes until the order is lifted.

“We have the resources available to find the suspect,” Smiley said.

The eight wounded individuals are in critical but stable condition, the mayor said. He did not state whether all of the victims were students.

The mayor said that a person initially believed to be involved in the shooting was detained, but it was later determined that the person had no connection to the incident.

“We are still receiving information about what happened, but for now we are just telling people to lock their doors and remain alert,” said Providence City Councilor John Conkleaves.

The shooting occurred in the Barus and Holley building, a seven-story complex that houses the engineering school and the physics department. According to the university’s website, the building contains more than 100 laboratories, dozens of classrooms, and offices.

Final exams for the end of the first semester were underway in that building when the shooting began.

U.S. President Donald Trump told reporters that he had been briefed on the attack and that the FBI had been sent to the scene.
