Surveillance camera footage showing the moment prison guards discovered Jeffrey Epstein’s body in his cell has seen the light of day for the first time, after being uncovered by the British Telegraph.

Epstein was being held at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in New York, on charges of human trafficking for the purpose of sexual exploitation, when he was found without signs of life on August 10, 2019.

The circumstances of the financier’s suicide, as well as his connections to a number of powerful and publicly exposed figures – including presidents, media moguls, and members of the British royal family – have for years fueled conspiracy theories suggesting that his death was not accidental.

Until now, no footage of the actual moment the body was discovered had been publicly released.

While reviewing an archive of around three million declassified documents published by the U.S. Department of Justice, the Telegraph found a video recording that precisely shows the moment when a prison officer discovered Epstein at 6:30 a.m.

The footage shows the silhouette of a guard approaching a security desk next to the isolated floor where Epstein’s cell was located. Approximately ten seconds later, the guard heads toward the cell itself, where the body was found.

Just over a minute later, one guard moves back and forth between the desk and the cell corridor, soon joined by two others. The guards then move quickly down the corridor. Epstein was officially pronounced dead at 6:39 a.m.

According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Epstein committed suicide, a conclusion they say is supported by the findings of an autopsy conducted nine days after his death.

Investigators also stated that from the moment Epstein was locked in his cell at 10:40 p.m. on August 9 until around 6:30 the following morning, “no one entered any of the SHU floors,” the special housing unit where he was held.

However, that claim was called into question after the release of new surveillance footage from the so-called Epstein files, which at 10:39 p.m. shows an orange figure moving up the stairs toward Epstein’s cell.

The Office of the Inspector General of the Department of Justice and the FBI drew different conclusions from that footage.

In the FBI’s report, the blurry silhouette is described as a “possible inmate.” The Office of the Inspector General, however, states that it was an officer carrying orange “laundry or bedding,” and records him in the final report as an “unidentified correctional officer.”
