Thirty-nine people were killed in a collision between two trains in southern Spain, a new toll announced today said.
A high-speed train carrying about 300 passengers on the Malaga–Madrid route derailed in Adamuz, in the province of Córdoba, and collided with another train coming from the opposite direction that was carrying 184 passengers.
At least 73 people were injured, 24 of them seriously, El Pais reports.
Several cars of the other train then fell down an embankment about four meters high, which is hampering access to the accident site, the Andalusian minister said.
Transport Minister Óscar Puente described the accident as “extremely strange,” stressing that it occurred on a straight section of track, that the line was refurbished in May, and expressing confidence that the investigation will clarify the causes.
Due to the severity of the incident, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez canceled all engagements for today.
