In the Hilandar monastery on Mount Athos (Greece) snow fell last night and delighted Serbian monks who have not had the opportunity to see snow during the Christmas holidays for almost 10 years.
“It is a true rarity on Athos and causes great joy among the residents of the Holy Mountain. Hilandar monks remember the last snowfall on the eve of Christmas in 2017,” it is stated on the official Instagram page of the Hilandar monastery.
In that year of 2017, even the oldest monks, who reside on the Holy Mountain in this Serbian sanctuary founded in 1189, were in awe because of the snow that had fallen to almost half a meter at that time.
As previously announced, a strong cold wave this winter did not bypass Greece either, bringing a sudden drop in temperatures, heavy snowfall, frost, and strong northern winds across the country.
Although the climate on Mount Athos is Mediterranean, the winters there are harsh, damp, and windy. Its hills, coves, and valleys are covered with very lush vegetation, while the higher areas can sometimes turn white in winter, but no one expected snow like this.
