Members of the Sector for Emergency Situations have extinguished over 1,400 fires that broke out on the territory of Serbia in the past 10 days. Fourteen people were injured, there were no fatalities, and 15 people, hundreds of houses, domestic animals, vehicles, properties, and agricultural crops were saved thanks to the timely reactions of firefighters-rescuers, the Ministry of Interior announced today.
The statement noted that 4,149 firefighters-rescuers and 1,749 different types of vehicles were involved in extinguishing the fires.
Assistance to the firefighters-rescuers, as many times before, was provided by members of the Helicopter Unit, members of Volunteer Fire Brigades, police officers, and citizens.
Since the beginning of July, 3,538 fires have been registered on the territory of Serbia, a number never before recorded, and on July 7 alone, 628 fires were registered, according to the statement.
The number of open-space fires during June and July this year has increased by 284 percent compared to the same period last year.
The Ministry of Interior’s Sector for Emergency Situations appeals to all citizens to be responsible, respect the law, and be very careful when using open flames. If a fire is noticed, it is necessary to notify the fire department as soon as possible by calling 193.
The statement reminds that the Law on Fire Protection and other laws prohibit burning grass and low vegetation in open areas, stubble remains, burning garbage, as well as lighting fires in forests and within 200 meters of the forest edge.
For non-compliance with these legal provisions, prescribed fines for individuals range from 10,000 to 50,000 dinars, while fines for burning stubble remains, plant remains, and garbage for individuals amount to 10,000 dinars, and for legal entities from 300,000 to 1,000,000 dinars.
