Tyler Robinson (22), who was formally charged yesterday for the assassination of American politician Charlie Kirk, admitted to the murder in a message he left for his roommate and partner, according to the U.S. Prosecutor’s Office.
Robinson, according to the Utah District Attorney, left a note under the keyboard, which his roommate found, stating: “I had the opportunity to eliminate Charlie Kirk and I will use it,” BBC reported today.
The roommate, who was also the accused’s romantic partner, was allegedly disturbed when he found the handwritten note, and in the text messages that followed, Robinson allegedly explained that he shot Kirk because he was “tired of his hatred.”
According to the charging document, Robinson told his partner that he had been planning the attack for more than a week, CNN reports.
Robinson has been charged with aggravated murder, a firearm offense, obstruction of justice, witness tampering, as well as a violent crime in the presence of children, and yesterday he appeared via video from a jail cell during his first court appearance before a judge in Provo, Utah.
Prosecutors emphasized that they will seek the death penalty for the murder of Kirk, who was killed on September 10 while speaking at Utah Valley University.
The accused was arrested after a 33-hour manhunt and did not admit guilt during questioning.
However, during further investigations it was discovered that he had sent detailed messages to his partner describing his movements after the shooting and mentioning plans to take the rifle from the scene.
The investigation revealed that the suspect’s DNA was found on the trigger of the rifle believed to have been used in the crime.
It was also discovered during the investigation that Robinson’s father suspected the weapon used in the shooting belonged to his grandfather.
Robinson also allegedly ordered his partner to delete the messages and to remain silent if questioned by police, which led to additional charges of witness tampering.
Robinson has still not entered a plea.
