In an emotional address at a public commemoration in Arizona, the widow of right-wing activist Charlie Kirk said that she forgives the man accused of killing her husband.

“My husband wanted to save young men, just like the one who took his life. To that man, that young man – I forgive him. I forgive him because Christ did so and because Charlie would have done so,” said Erika Kirk to the audience that filled the stadium.

The audience in the stadium then rose to their feet and began to applaud.

Prosecutors have charged 22-year-old Tyler Robinson with the murder of Charlie Kirk on September 10 at Utah Valley University. Robinson, who comes from Utah, could face the death penalty if convicted.

Authorities have announced that Robinson sent a message to his partner after the shooting in which he wrote that he was fed up with Kirk’s “hatred.” In an interview with the New York Times published on Sunday, Erika Kirk said she was asked if she wanted the accused to receive the death penalty.

“I’ll be honest. I told our lawyer that I want the government to decide on that. I don’t want the blood of that man on my conscience,” said Erika Kirk.

“So, when I get to heaven and Jesus tells me: ‘An eye for an eye? Is that how we do things?’ And because of that I won’t be in heaven, I won’t be with Charlie?”, she added.

In her address at State Farm Stadium, Erika Kirk promised that she would continue her husband’s work as the newly appointed leader of the organization he founded, Turning Point USA.

“The answer to hatred is not hatred. The answer we know from the Gospel is love and always love – love for our enemies and love for those who persecute us,” she said.

Kirk was killed during the first appearance on a tour of universities called “American Comeback.” His death sparked a fierce political debate about the power of words, decency, the rise of violence, and freedom of speech.
