A monument to Gavrilo Princip has been unveiled in the future “Young Bosnia” square in front of a newly constructed residential and business building in the center of Foča.
A plaque bearing the names of the members of the “Young Bosnia” organization has also been unveiled on this building. Bećković said that Gavrilo Princip did something that was the greatest revolution in European history.

“Princip fulfilled his destiny and justified his name,” said Bećković, adding that everyone had disowned him, even the Serbian government at the time, but never the youth, the poor, and the poets.
“I am honored to be here in Foča for the first time on this occasion. I heard that there are 3,000 students here, three faculties,” said Bećković, emphasizing that there were many notable people among the “Young Bosnians.”
Kusturica said of himself that he was the last surviving “Young Bosnian” and that he was very happy that another Gavrilo was “appearing” in the territory where the Serbian people live because he believes that he made a correction in time. He stated that Princip was one of those who corrected the meaning of a century, ultimately leading to liberation from slavery.
“Since the Serbian people are known for fighting against slavery, this was the highest point of that correction or idea that Princip brought meaning to our lives and led us to that heroic point where he opened the paths to freedom for us. We inherit that freedom today, the question is how much we are able to preserve it,” said Kusturica.
The donors of the monument are Davor Lugonjić and Marko Sarić from Belgrade, both originally from the Foča region. Lugonjić said that the idea of freedom demonstrated by Princip and Young Bosnia will not die, “but will return at least as hope that it is possible to live freely with such an idea and that every sacrifice for freedom is not in vain.”
He emphasized that his desire is for this square to be a gathering place for all people and a place of shared life with the idea of freedom, to continue the traditions of Young Bosnia because it is “timeless.”
The unveiling of the monument was preceded by a ceremonial academy at which a short film “The Last Days of Gavrilo Princip” by the Belgrade Faculty of Dramatic Arts was shown.
