The Greek expert Giannis Sfairopoulos is no longer the coach of Crvena Zvezda basketball players, the Belgrade club announced.
After only three games at the start of the new season, the leaders of Crvena Zvezda made a radical cut.
The poor performances during the preparatory period were followed by defeats against Olimpia Milan, Bayern, and on Monday against Zadar, which was definitely the straw that broke the camel’s back and cost Giannis Sfairopoulos his job.
“Following a joint meeting between club president Željko Drčelić, general manager for the sports sector Milan Tomić, club management, and former coach Giannis Sfairopoulos, a decision was made that Mr. Sfairopoulos will no longer serve as the head coach of our club’s first team. This decision was made with only one goal that both sides had – that at this moment it is in the best interest of Crvena Zvezda,” the club’s statement read.

During his time on the Crvena Zvezda bench, the Greek led the first team in 145 games with a record of 90 wins and 55 losses.
In his mandate, which began at the end of October 2023, Crvena Zvezda won one ABA League, one Serbian champion title, and two national Radivoj Korać Cups.
“The club hereby thanks coach Giannis Sfairopoulos for everything he has done on the Crvena Zvezda bench, the way he gentlemanly represented the club on and off the court, and for everything he has done to jointly raise the club to a higher level. We wish him much luck, health, and professional success in the continuation of his career. With the trophies won, as well as the award he received as the most successful coach of our red-and-white family, Sfairopoulos will remain an indelible part of our club’s history,” the Zvezda statement writes.
The red-and-whites also thanked assistant coach Vasilis Geragotelis for his great effort, commitment, and contribution during his stay in Belgrade.
