Professor of the Faculty of Medical Sciences in Kragujevac, Vladimir Jakovljević, stated today that it is a great honor for him, but also an even greater obligation for further work, that he received recognition in Las Vegas in September that one of the awards of the International Academy of Cardiovascular Sciences (IACS) will henceforth bear his name.
Such things happen to some scientists and other important people in the world posthumously or in deep retirement, and I am only a third of the way through my career, Jakovljević pointed out for Tanjug, adding that receiving the global award named after the scientist Grant Pierce at the annual meeting of the North American Section of the IACS in Las Vegas is a great recognition for him and for the entire team with whom he works at the Faculty of Medical Sciences in Kragujevac.
“I had an indication of this earlier this year from the executive director of that Academy that he would propose to the Executive Committee that the award be named after me. It was accepted in March, I received a letter from them that it was accepted, and it was announced in Las Vegas at the annual meeting of the North American Section of the International Academy of Cardiovascular Sciences in September. The award was given for the first time last year in Prague, to scientists who are better than me,” he stated.
The professor stressed that the fact that the award will bear his name is an exceptional recognition for him personally, but at the same time an obligation because the people who work with him should continue along this path and be even better.
When asked what kind of responsibility this award carries and what he feels is a need or obligation to do to justify the fact that the award bears his name, Jakovljević said that it is a great obligation for him personally, and only then a satisfaction, given that this organization always recognizes excellence in science, but also the possibility of organizing various congresses and attracting young people.
The professor pointed out that for him, as president of the European Section of the IACS in his second term, the main task now is to expand the influence of that Academy to as many European countries as possible and attract as many young people as possible.
He added that he hopes that during his second term as president of the European Section of this Academy, he will manage to integrate all the countries of the Western Balkans and Central Europe into this, and include an even greater number of young people who are interested in working with him and his group.
“I have been at the Faculty of Medical Sciences in Kragujevac for 30 years, and before that I collaborated for five years as a student. I have had these inclinations since high school; science is my life in a professional sense. I try to pass on the virus I have been infected with since childhood to younger generations, and I’m doing well so far,” the professor said.
