The administration of the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics in Novi Sad announced that last night the police headed towards the entrance of the faculty building, but that the dean prevented them from entering by telling them that they were not invited inside.
“Last night the police headed towards the entrance of the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, but the dean of the PMF, Srđan Rončević, went out in front of the faculty and informed them via megaphone that they were not invited and that they have no legal right to enter the faculty, which the police respected at that moment,” the PMF stated in a statement.
The faculty administration demands that the autonomy of the university be respected, as well as the legal provision that the police may not access the faculty without an invitation from the dean.
“Also, we appeal that the situation at all faculties be resolved exclusively peacefully – by agreement, without the use of force and chemical agents. As the Administration, we stand by our students and professors and strongly condemn every form of violence,” the PMF stated.
Students and citizens took shelter last night in the buildings of the Rectorate and the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics in Novi Sad, fleeing before the onslaught of the police.
After several hours, the police let the citizens and students out of the PMF. As one student told N1, the police chased the citizens who returned to the faculty, and the dean prevented the police, who went after them, from breaking in.
