Nepal’s Finance Minister, Bishnu Paudel, was reportedly attacked during a protest, and footage of the incident soon began circulating on social media.

Kathmandu is the scene of mass protests these days, led by youth from Generation Z. The demonstrations escalated into violence, and a shocking video appeared on social media showing protestors chasing and attacking Finance Minister Bishnu Prasad Paudel (65).

Footage of the Attack

In the video, Paudel is running through the streets of Kathmandu while a furious mob pursues him.

At one point, a young protestor jumps out from the opposite direction, leaps, and kicks the minister.

Paudel loses his balance, hits a wall, but immediately gets up and continues to run. The footage cuts off at that moment.

After that, footage was also published of protestors dragging the naked minister through the street.

Unrest Across the Country

This is just one of many incidents during the protests that started on Monday, when protestors demanded the lifting of the social media ban and a more decisive fight against corruption.

Although the government withdrew the ban the very next day and re-enabled access to networks like Facebook, YouTube, and X, the citizens’ dissatisfaction did not stop. Kathmandu police spokesperson Shekhar Khanal stated that many did not respect the introduced curfew and that fires and attacks occurred in different parts of the city.

Resignations and Political Crisis

Under pressure from the young protestors, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, who started his fourth term last year, was forced to resign. His departure came a day after one of the deadliest clashes in recent years, in which at least 19 people died.

The house of former Interior Minister Ramesh Lekhak, who resigned on Monday accepting moral responsibility for the 19 deaths, was also completely destroyed. In total, four government ministers resigned, including three from the Nepali Congress.

Due to reports of arson in the vicinity of the airport, domestic flights from Kathmandu’s international airport were canceled.

Social Media as a Trigger

The social media ban was introduced last week when the government blocked 26 unregistered platforms. However, TikTok was not included in the measure, so it was on that network that videos began to spread comparing the difficult life of ordinary Nepalis with the lavish lifestyle and luxurious travels of politicians’ children. That footage additionally fueled public anger.
