KRAGUJEVAC, Serbia – A catastrophic incident occurred this morning at the Urology Clinic of the University Clinical Center Kragujevac when water pipes burst, causing a flood in a ward housing critically ill patients. The deluge resulted in ceiling tiles collapsing and shattering upon impact with the floor, a situation that could have led to tragic consequences. This clinic was fully renovated just last year, in 2023.
Unofficially, sources indicate that more than 10 patients were in the Urology Department when the pipes burst this morning, and medical staff were also present at the time of the incident.
“An official statement will be released today by 3 PM. We cannot yet confirm what caused the flood, but patients will certainly be relocated. This is a department that was renovated two years ago,” officials at UKC Kragujevac told us.
Since this morning, a video of the urology ward has been circulating on social media, clearly showing flooded corridors and shattered ceiling tiles. The impact of the falling tiles could have caused severe injuries had patients or staff been underneath them at the moment of rupture.
The floors are also covered with towels and bedding to absorb as much water as possible, which had been gushing from the burst pipes all morning.

It’s worth recalling that in the summer of 2023, renovation work began on parts of UKC Kragujevac, including the Urology Department. As the director, Professor Dr. Slobodan MilisavljeviÄ, stated to the media at the time, the Urology Clinic, located in the “old surgery” building dating back to the 1920s, was the largest construction site.
“Nothing had been done in that building for the last 50 years; patients were treated, and employees worked in significantly difficult conditions. That’s why we decided to thoroughly renovate that clinic ā patient rooms, intensive care, corridors, carpentry, floors, ceilings, electrical installations⦠To date, the renovation of electrical installations and ceilings has been completed, and floor renovation is underway. Due to this work, urology patients are currently hospitalized at the Clinic for Nephrology and in the Emergency Center, given that the summer operating regime is in effect,” MilisavljeviÄ said in July 2023.
