Croatia today gets a new Law on Cemeteries regulating the management of cemeteries, and its target are Serbian monuments erected after May 30, 1990, which are threatened with removal.

Within 30 days from the entry into force of the new law, all existing grave equipment and memorials that are not in accordance with its provisions must be removed, Croatian media report.

During the parliamentary debate, it was stated that Cyrillic-written monuments that, as they say, do not offend the moral and national feelings of citizens will not be removed, but those that “offend,” without explanation of how, will be removed.

On April 3, the Croatian government sent a new Law on Cemeteries to parliamentary procedure, which envisages the removal of Serbian monuments erected after May 30, 1990.

Croatian Deputy Prime Minister Branko Bačić previously stated that one of the reasons that prompted them to adopt the new law was that after the last war, graves remained on whose monuments and plaques were inscribed, as he stated, inappropriate names contrary to the constitutional order of Croatia.
