Instead of raising cows, sheep, and other usual livestock on his estate, Dušan Kostić from the village of Brzan, halfway between Batočina and Jagodina, has become a unique stockbreeder in Serbia. This host’s highly unusual farm spans over ten hectares of land, and only there can you see rare specimens of white deer, roe deer, and fallow deer. Among them, the rare white fallow deer, brought from Lovćen, stands out. Dušan managed to comply with all laws and regulations to engage in this type of business, which is the raising of game.
– Currently, there are about 30 animals on the farm; earlier, there used to be even more. They are demanding animals and require a lot of attention because they are not easy to keep. I managed to partially tame them in this area of 10 hectares, and they are now semi-wild. They recognize me, and when they see me, they immediately come to the feeding area. However, when they sense another person next to me, they become more cautious and run as far as possible, as they are not tame – says this hardworking host.
Dušan provides substantial amounts of food daily to feed this truly unusual herd. The animals’ special treats are hay and corn, which he serves near the forest where they hide from unwanted views.

– Those are the two main things they like to consume, although when they are in the hill, they look for food themselves. They have that innate instinct to search for food; they always find something, from a leaf to grass or similar. These are animals with very good hearing; they know exactly when I am nearby and what I have brought them, whether hay or corn. They wait a few minutes and come to the feeder themselves, which shows how cautious they are – says Dušan.
Dušan performs complete supervision over this strange company from four extremely modern lookout points, from which you can only see the famous white deer, which represents a real attraction for wildlife lovers, with binoculars.
– It is a real rarity to have such a white deer, but I hope there will be more soon. I am waiting for a female specimen to arrive from the Czech Republic, and thereby I will multiply the herd. They are highly priced, but I don’t raise them for money but as a hobby. Hunters know the value of this animal, and if it is, as they say, in gold, its price goes up to 2,500 euros. This means that the antler weighs more than 3.5 kilograms and has a luxurious palm (lopata). The white deer needs about five years to achieve these characteristics – concludes Dušan.
