The European Parliament in Strasbourg has just voted on the Resolution on Serbia, which, judging by the 31 points of the report, is the harshest ever towards the regime. The authorities in Serbia are called upon to fully clarify the circumstances of the canopy collapse in Novi Sad, sanction those responsible, and provide full support to students. The camp in Pionirski Park is marked as illegal, while concern is expressed over the engagement of persons with criminal backgrounds in organizing anti-protests by the ruling party.
457 MEPs voted for the resolution, 103 were against.
Members of the European Parliament voted on the harmonized text of the resolution on polarization and growing repression in Serbia, one year after the canopy collapse at the Novi Sad Railway Station. The European Parliament will call on the Serbian authorities for the urgent and full implementation of all OSCE and ODIHR recommendations to ensure free and fair elections in Serbia.
What the MEPs said in the debate on the Resolution
MEPs yesterday had sharp criticism of the regime of the President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić.
At the very beginning of the debate, the European Commissioner for Enlargement, Marta Kos, assessed that it is a lie that the EU Council’s decision will prevent gas transfer to Serbia.
“Instead, the EU supports Serbia in diversifying all sources of supply and integrating into EU energy networks,” Kos said.
Speaking about the victims of the canopy collapse in Novi Sad, Kos said that “that moment of sadness touched all of us, and especially touched Serbia.”
“The tragedy and its background have further deepened the polarization of society in Serbia. Over the past 11 months, students and citizens have been protesting in cities and villages and demanding accountability. Corruption and irresponsibility are the two main triggers of the protests, they also represent the motive for dissatisfaction due to a lack of democracy, the enslavement of the media, and the impunity of politicians,” she pointed out.
As she stated, the Commission is following this situation.
She pointed out that the police mostly respected the right to assembly during the protests, but incidents have recently been recorded in which there was violence against students, peaceful demonstrators, and journalists, as well as inappropriate use of force.
“We expect the police response to be proportionate and to respect fundamental rights. The EU expects an investigation into these cases as a priority, and we also condemn all acts of hatred, vandalism, and violence by demonstrators and continue to call on both sides to de-escalate tensions,” she stated.
Also, MEP Irena Joveva said in the European Parliament debate on Serbia that Serbian students are fighting for democracy and that “the time of impunity for autocrats in Belgrade is coming to an end.”
“Targeted sanctions should be against every responsible person and do not rush with the book you promised, because your lesson of force is over. Who will destroy whom in the whole world, we will see soon. I choose justice, I choose Novi Sad and I choose now,” Irena Joveva said in her address.
She pointed out that the desire of demonstrators in Serbia is simple – “not tomorrow, but now.”
“We see this grotesque irony that those who order beatings call the beaten people Nazis, inventing fake ćaci students, while real students are bleeding for democracy,” Joveva stated.
Vučić commented on the Resolution
The President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, at today’s extraordinary address to the public regarding the fire and shooting in Ćacilend, also spoke about the European Parliament Resolution on Serbia, which is scheduled to be adopted today, and on that occasion called the MEPs pathological liars and severely ill.
Vučić said that he did not fully read the aforementioned Resolution, but that he was very satisfied with the discussion in the European Parliament, because “it showed who the people sowing hatred against Serbia are.”
“The largest number of people who spoke were Croats, six of them, all in accordance with the colored revolution. We have had much sharper resolutions. Here the EPP and some other patriots made sure that the tone of the discussion and the text itself were different. What worries me is when they say that they have relevant sources that say a sound cannon was used. That says that there are pathological liars there, and you have that in every society. But to have the level of pathological lying from the level of the EP, I did not expect that,” said Vučić, and then came to the defense of the JZO commander.
“That level of triviality, that you, by transcribing United Group media, mention Mr. Kričak by name, is already a severe and malicious disease. And today, Mr. Kričak was the first on the scene, he flew in and contributed to clarifying and making things clear. A fighter without fear and fault, that’s why he bothers many. As well as Mr. Repac and many others. People who cling to the law like a drunkard to a fence post, who respect their country and the Constitution of the Republic of Serbia,” said Vučić and added:
“I saw that Ćacilend also bothered them and everything is much clearer. They are not bothered by 25,000 criminal gatherings, 60 or 70 occupied faculties, the fact that they obstruct our constitutionally guaranteed freedom of movement every day, none of that bothers them. They are bothered by one park and one single point. And then you see how politically colored it is. I have no problem with that and I wish them successful work in the future. If you prove that a sound cannon was used, I am no longer the president of Serbia.
