Belgian MEP Kathleen Van Brempt told Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić on X that “a true leader doesn’t silence their people, but enables them free and democratic elections.”
This morning, she tweeted in Serbian:
“A true leader does not silence their people. They enable them free democratic elections. That is what the people of Serbia are asking for. It’s time to listen to them, @avucic #pumpaj.”
Kathleen Van Brempt wrote on X last night:
Istinski vođa ne ućutkuje svoj narod. On im omogućava slobodne demokratske izbore. To je ono što narod Srbije traži. Vreme je da ih se posluša, @avucic. #pumpaj

“Full support to the people of Serbia protesting for freedom, democracy, transparency, and accountability from Vučić’s regime. It’s time for Europe to show support for their struggle. Stop the appeasement, now!” The word she used for appeasement is used in diplomacy to describe the foreign policy pursued by Western great powers in the 1930s, in the context of relations with Nazi Germany, Fascist Italy, and Japan, whose main characteristic was a lack of any decisive reaction to their aggressive policy.

As a reminder, Van Brempt attracted the attention of the Serbian public in May, after the first report and resolution on Serbia were presented in the European Parliament since Tonino Picula became the rapporteur for our country.
She then addressed Marta Kos and said that “it’s time for them to do something, because they are losing Serbia.”
“Rule of law, democracy, fundamental rights, all are under threat. Imagine this, today Serbian students are braver than the European Commission, perhaps the entire European Union; they are the ones pointing out the systemic shortcomings of democracy, they are the ones fighting for civil liberties, they are the ones condemning widespread corruption. Commissioner, they are fighting for European values and deserve our full support,” she said.
