British Prime Minister Keir Starmer today rejected the possibility of the United Kingdom entering a customs union with the EU, reports the British newspaper The Guardian.
Responding to questions from MPs in Parliament, he said that his Labour Party, in last year’s pre-election manifesto, committed itself to not bringing the UK into a customs union or the EU single market.
Starmer stated that the UK already has a trade agreement with the US, better than any other country has, and that it would not be reasonable to jeopardize it by joining a customs union.
The debate was triggered by an earlier bill proposed by the Liberal Democrats, which called on the government to negotiate the formation of a special customs union with the EU, the BBC reported.
