Jelena Dokić was urgently admitted to the hospital after she felt unwell after broadcasting a match at the U.S. Open. The former tennis player was commentating on a match for television in Australia and then took to Instagram to explain what happened, as well as that she would have to undergo surgery.
We are publishing her post in its entirety:
-When you end up in the emergency room after finishing your day’s coverage of the U.S. Open. I’m grateful I’m going to be okay.
I just wanted to post this as a reminder and a warning for our health, especially women’s and our reproductive health. I have a rather large fibroid (a non-cancerous growth in my uterus).
It was dismissed as nothing significant (a lot of women have them and live with them). Apparently. Whatever that means.
And while that can be the case, yes, many will also be more affected than others by its size, pain, flare-ups, and bleeding. Which is what happened to me. I will have to have surgery later this year to remove it.
In the meantime, it’s about managing the pain, heavy bleeding, and flare-ups. So far, everything has been fine, but for the last few months, something has been wrong. Something was not right.
That’s why I want this post to be an important reminder. Follow your instincts and feelings. If something is bothering you, don’t ignore it. Even if it turns out to be nothing, it is better to be safe than sorry later.
Get regular check-ups and for any, even the smallest, pain or something unusual, see a doctor immediately. Don’t ignore the pain, regular check-ups are key for early detection and can save your life.
And most importantly, never let anyone tell you it’s nothing, how you should feel, and always seek a second opinion and fight for yourself and your health. You know yourself best, and if you’re in pain or something is wrong and someone is ignoring it, see another person and don’t take “no” for an answer when it comes to scans, tests, and check-ups. You will always be your own best advocate for your health. So fight for yourself and don’t take “no” for an answer.
Also, a big thank you to the incredible healthcare workers at Epworth Hospital here in Melbourne. The work you do is incredible and thank you for taking care of me and making sure I was okay in the best and fastest way possible. You are all incredible. Legends.
