Novak Đoković became the oldest Masters semifinalist with a victory over Zizou Bergs 6:3, 7:5, but afterward seriously worried his fans.
The greatest tennis player of all time had to go through a real ordeal, and he himself said that this is one of the “physically toughest tournaments” of his career.
He emphasized that it was anything but easy to defeat the Belgian, who played the tennis of his life in Shanghai.
“Well, maybe it seems easy, but I assure you it’s not. No victory at this level is easy. Zizou Bergs played great tennis throughout the tournament. It would be disrespectful toward him if I said it was easy,” said Đoković.
Throughout the tournament, he has been struggling with minor or major issues with his left leg, mostly with the ankle.
“My leg was fine. In every match I play right now, there is always something wrong with my body. There are other issues I’m trying to work on day by day, and I hope things will get better as the tournament goes on,” he added.
The Serbian tennis player will play in the semifinal on Saturday against Valentin Vacherot, who, as a qualifier and the world’s No. 204, reached the semifinal — the second-biggest surprise in Masters history.
