Serbian tennis overnight lost 50 million dinars from the Serbian state budget, and this was persistently kept quiet. Now Novak Djokovic has decided to raise the question publicly.
Although tennis is still a top-category sport, it is not receiving the attention it deserves. On the contrary, it is often disputed, and now also financially endangered. The situation is more serious than it seemed at first glance. Serbian tennis now has almost two and a half times less money. That is, to put it mildly, unsustainable.
“Yes, two and a half times less… We are all looking for an answer, and I think I am not the address to which this question should be directed, but rather the Ministry of Sport and the minister. One should ask why this is the case for a sport that over the past twenty-plus years has been one of the most successful sports and brands, a sport that has produced some of the best ambassadors for Serbia in the world… Why this is so, I do not know.
More or less all sports… What I saw on the list and what I learned from conversations with various people is that all major sports received increased funding. Only tennis, from that so-called ‘category one,’ since tennis is in that category, received a budget two and a half times smaller. That puts the Tennis Federation of Serbia in a checkmate position. I am not in the Federation, my uncle is the president and he conveyed to me that this is now a matter of… A few months to bankruptcy,” the Serbian ace said candidly.
He decided to publicly demand an answer from the Ministry himself and conveyed this publicly through the media. After all, since Nova.rs and a few others reported these devastating pieces of news, we have heard nothing but resolute silence from the most important address.
“Ask the Ministry yourselves, and have others ask as well, why this is the case. I have my own thoughts, but it is better not to share them. I think some things are obvious, but the question should be addressed to the appropriate institutions, and then let’s see what they have to say.”
