Is Novak Djokovic truly considering a move to Greece? If true, what are his motivations? A Greek portal has broken down all the contributing factors.

The well-known Greek magazine “Glow.gr” has published a series of details from Greece, claiming that the Djokovics plan to move and live in the Greek capital. While the idea of building a tennis academy there didn’t seem impossible (as Djokovic stated he wouldn’t initiate such a project in Serbia again), the Greeks have taken their findings a step further, asserting that the entire family will relocate.

Here is the full text from the Greek publication detailing the reasons why Djokovic chose to move to Athens.

A New Chapter in Athens

From the upcoming September, Greece is preparing to host one of the most brilliant athletes in the history of world sports. Novak Djokovic, holder of 24 Grand Slam titles and record-holder for the most weeks spent at number one in the world rankings, is beginning a new chapter of his life with Athens as the main place of residence for himself and his family.

This decision is not sudden but the result of a relationship carefully built with Greece over the years. Djokovic and his wife, Jelena, have visited Greece numerous times – either for summer holidays on islands like Crete and Mykonos or during pilgrimages to Mount Athos, a spiritually significant place for Djokovic. During 2024, formal contacts with the Greek government commenced within the framework of the “Golden Visa” program, after which his idea of moving to Greece took concrete shape.

Jelena and their two children, Stefan and Tara, will be the first to permanently move to Athens in the autumn. According to available information, the couple has already visited several private schools in the northern suburbs of the capital, seeking a suitable English-language environment for their children’s education. Simultaneously, they are searching for an ideal home – their priority is peace, security, and proximity to nature, although they do not rule out the possibility of a house with a sea view.

Djokovic himself, while continuing to compete in tournaments, plans to use Athens as his base. The summer US Open will be his last major trip before he finally settles in Greece. According to his close associates, he wishes to travel less, spend more time with his family, and dedicate himself to mentoring younger athletes.

Love for Greece and Future Endeavors

Djokovic’s love for Greece is not only reflected in its natural beauty and rich cultural heritage. As he previously stated, he is particularly inspired by the warmth of the Greek people, the balance between tradition and modernity, and the spiritual depth of Orthodoxy, which connects him to Mount Athos and the monks with whom he has close relations.

The choice of Athens, in addition to the quality of life, also has practical reasons – its proximity to most European cities where tournaments are held, excellent health and educational infrastructure, and the fact that Greece is increasingly developing as a country of business opportunities for global personalities. Djokovic’s presence in Greece will be accompanied by a series of new activities – among them, the establishment of a tennis academy for the development of young talents from Greece and the Balkans.

The first informal public step was made on Friday evening when Djokovic had dinner with Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis at a renowned restaurant in Kolonaki. The meeting took place in a friendly yet substantive atmosphere, discussing details of his relocation, investment interests, and support for initiatives that could bring international prestige to Greece through sport.

Sources state that an official announcement about Djokovic’s cooperation with Greek institutions or foundations will follow soon. Furthermore, plans are underway to expand the work of his humanitarian foundation in partnership with Greek organizations, particularly in the areas of education and child welfare.

A Legacy Beyond the Court

With 24 Grand Slam titles – more than any other male tennis player in history – Novak Djokovic has redefined the boundaries of tennis. His prolonged dominance, consistency at the top level, records for Masters titles and weeks at number one, as well as his ability to win on all surfaces, rank him among the greatest in history.

However, beyond his sporting achievements, his mental resilience, discipline, and dedication to physical and spiritual preparation make him not only a tennis legend but also one of the most influential athletes in history.

With a net worth exceeding 700 million dollars, Novak Djokovic is now turning towards a more personal, meaningful, and peaceful life. His move to Athens is not just a choice of a new residence – but also the beginning of a new phase of life. As a father, husband, mentor, investor, and friend of Greece, it seems he has found the ideal place for personal fulfillment – far from the clamor of the world’s arenas.
