Nemanja Matić is known for having strong convictions and sticking to them on principle, even if it costs him. So, in the season behind us, he consciously risked a penalty from the Disciplinary Commission of Ligue 1. And he received two matches of suspension, plus another two conditionally, for covering the rainbow flag on Lyon’s jersey during a national campaign against homophobia.
True, at the end of the process, he softened his stance on this sensitive issue and accepted the proposal from the competent football authority, about which the public was informed by a statement.
“After hearing the player, the commission sanctioned Matić with a two-match suspension and a two-match suspended sentence. In addition, the commission offered the player, and he immediately agreed during the hearing, to participate within six months in an awareness campaign against homophobia in football, in cooperation with a professional association that works with the LFP throughout the season with clubs and fans,” states the L1 announcement.
The former defensive midfielder for Manchester United, Benfica, Chelsea, Rennes, Roma, Vitesse, Košice, and Kolubara committed the aforementioned offense in the final round of the French football championship, and for the same transgression, Egyptian footballer Ahmed Hassan from the Havre team received an identical punishment.
