Longtime president of the Volleyball Federation of Serbia and former national team player Aleksandar Boričić has died as a result of a stroke.
He was one of the most influential figures in the history of volleyball, and even served as president of the European Volleyball Confederation. He spent his playing career at Crvena zvezda, with whom he won various trophies in 1962, and he was also part of the team that brought the first volleyball medal to Yugoslavia.
He was at the helm of the Volleyball Federation of Serbia during its “golden days,” when the team became Olympic and European champions.
Vladimir Grbić said farewell to one of the most influential figures in our sport:
“I have just learned that the president of the Volleyball Federation of Yugoslavia, Serbia and Montenegro, Serbia, president of the CEV and vice president of the FIVB Aleksandar Boričić has passed away due to the consequences of a stroke. I will not list the achievements, titles, hobbies and merits. There are countless. A man from whom I learned the most about sports diplomacy and managing sports processes. The most deserving for the successes of the golden generation and the status of our volleyball. Although hindered because of his integrity, he remained loyal to himself, his family and what he loved until the end. Above all, a MAN. Now with his teammates and friend, bronze medalist from EPO 75, my father Miloš. May the earth rest lightly upon you, teacher and the only true president. Thank you for everything, every piece of advice, reprimand, suggestion. Some voids that remain after you can never be filled by anyone. No matter how hard they try. My sincerest condolences to the family. Seki, Aleksandra, Ivana and the grandchildren. Crvena zvezda has lost a great supporter and sport…is not even aware of the value this man carried.”
