The White House has launched a media initiative called the “House of Shame,” a site on the US government page, aimed at commenting on and criticizing media reporting on the work of President Donald Trump’s administration.
The site, according to the White House, is intended to serve as a mechanism to combat “deceptions, fabrications from anonymous ‘sources,’ and partisan slander.” It is planned to be updated regularly.
Among the first targets of the “House of Shame” was the newspaper “The Washington Post,” declared the “Offender of the Week.” The site, however, also criticizes other media outlets, including “The New York Times,” CNN, CBS News, and “The Independent.”
The government website contains a detailed analysis of “claims” attributed to certain publications and journalists, grouping them into various categories, in an effort to challenge their accuracy and objectivity. Critics view this initiative as another step in the Trump administration’s effort to discredit media that report critically on his work.
Accredited news agencies such as the Associated Press and Reuters also appear on the site, with the White House citing “bias,” “omission of context,” and “falsehood” as objections to their reporting.
Other categories listed on the site commenting on media work include “False Claims,” “Reckless Conduct,” “Misrepresentation,” “False Representation,” and “Left-Wing Lunacy.”
At the same time, no news outlet favored by conservatives has been accused of bias.
Executive Editor of “The Washington Post” Matt Murray said the newspaper would not change its reporting and would “continue to report rigorously and accurately in the service of all America.”
“Let’s be clear what is happening here – the wrong and deliberate targeting of journalists by government officials for exercising a constitutionally protected right,” Murray said.
The conservative media watchdog, the Media Research Center (MRC), which has previously accused news networks of being biased toward liberal views in their reporting, welcomed the launch of the website.
