Students and teachers, as well as non-teaching staff of the Fifth Belgrade Gymnasium, will return to their home building starting Monday, December 22, whereby classes in this school will be completely normalized, the Ministry of Education announced today.
Minister of Education Dejan Vuk Stanković said that after seven weeks of blockade, and more than two weeks of establishing facts and circumstances related to the illegal blockade, the Fifth Belgrade Gymnasium is returning to the educational system in the Republic of Serbia at full capacity.
“The teaching process was saved through teaching activities in two elementary schools, and the students will have a legally completed first semester,” he said.
On behalf of the Ministry, Stanković thanked the directors, teachers, and students of the two schools where classes were temporarily organized for the students of the Fifth Belgrade Gymnasium for the solidarity they showed.
“We emphasize that the Ministry’s goal is exclusively institutional normalization at the Fifth Belgrade Gymnasium and the dedicated work of all teachers and administration on restoring the school’s reputation,” he said, adding that the message from the Ministry of Education is clear – a strong commitment to the autonomy of the educational process and a strict separation of politics from education.
He pointed out that he believes this should be a common goal for everyone – the Ministry, the administration, the teaching staff, the students, and their parents.
“The election of a new director will be organized within the shortest period provided by law, and the Ministry’s preference is for it to be a person from the collective. The Fifth Belgrade Gymnasium should not be a political-media battlefield, but an institution of knowledge, a place where skills are developed, curiosity is encouraged, and the character of students is built, creating future free and responsible citizens. On behalf of the Ministry of Education, I invite everyone to work together on these goals,” Stanković said.
