Residents across the Chicago area have reported an unusual smell that seems chemical and like “burnt electrical equipment.” The unpleasant odor has lingered in the air for more than 12 hours, and local fire departments are working to discover the source.
The local fire department stated that multiple calls have been received reporting the smell across a wide area stretching from central Illinois, through Indiana, all the way to the border with Wisconsin.
Officials have stated so far that the smell likely comes from a location south of Algonquin, which is located about 65 kilometers northwest of Chicago, but the exact source remains unknown.
Fire officials announced that they are actively coordinating efforts with regional partners and other agencies to determine the cause and monitor any potential threats to public safety and health.
Authorities called on residents who have symptoms such as difficulty breathing, dizziness, nausea, or irritation to seek medical help. Officials emphasized that 911 should only be called in the case of an immediate emergency or if a life is at risk.
The fire department stated that they will release more information when new findings become available.
