The Higher Public Prosecutor’s Office in Novi Sad announced that it is unable to complete the investigation in the case of the canopy collapse at the Novi Sad Railway Station, as the entire investigation file is held by the Higher Court in that city, which, according to the prosecution, has not yet responded to the defense’s procedural motions, due to which the questioning of the expert commission was interrupted.
The Higher Public Prosecutor’s Office stated in its announcement that, as part of the supplementary investigation into the canopy collapse, it has continuously undertaken evidentiary actions, during which, by order of the Higher Court in Novi Sad, witnesses who had previously given testimony were re-examined.
“On April 29, 2025, the examination of the expert commission began, which was interrupted due to procedural motions from the defense. The public is informed that the entire investigation file has been submitted to the Higher Court in Novi Sad for a decision on the defense’s procedural motions: to exclude certain evidence from the case file, and to undertake certain evidentiary actions, which the prosecution had previously rejected as superfluous. As the Higher Court in Novi Sad has not yet decided on these motions, and since this is a detention case, for which there is increased public interest, the prosecution has sent a submission to the Higher Court in Novi Sad to highlight the aforementioned circumstances,” stated the Higher Public Prosecutor’s Office in Novi Sad.
The prosecution emphasizes that in this manner it is “currently unable to complete the investigation and file an indictment against the persons responsible for the tragic event.”
The statement adds that the Prosecutor’s Office expects the Higher Court in Novi Sad to return the investigation file very soon, so that the investigation can be concluded and a full indictment filed “which will unequivocally indicate the criminal responsibility of the accused persons.”
