The government in Bulgaria fell after numerous protests over the budget law.

“The government has resigned. Our coalition met and discussed the current situation, as well as the decisions we must make. The protest should bring forth its leaders and announce how the transition and governance will proceed during the coming turbulent months. The transition must be guaranteed. That must be clear before the vote on the 2026 budget,” stated Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov.

Earlier today, the vote on the sixth no-confidence motion was interrupted and postponed for half an hour, after opposition MPs started chanting “Resign,” Nova reported.

Citizens need to elect their formal leaders – this is not a challenge addressed to Assen Vassilev, Bozhidar Bozhanov, Atanas Atanasov, or even President Rumen Radev, Zhelyazkov emphasized, Fakti.bg reports.

“Our desire is to be at the level that society expects from us. We hear the voice of the demonstrators,” the Prime Minister said.

“Young and old raised their voices for our resignation. The protest was about our excessive self-confidence. This protest is a protest for values, behavior, and attitude,” Zhelyazkov pointed out.

So far, his cabinet has survived five no-confidence votes. The last one was in mid-September, when the government received the support of 133 deputies from GERB-SDS, DPS-New Beginning, BSP, and ITN.

Previous no-confidence votes, all unsuccessful, concerned alleged failures in environmental policy, foreign policy, the fight against corruption, and fiscal policy.
