The General Director of Radio Television of Serbia, Dragan Bujošević, stated today on the show Oko that the public media service must be neutral and that RTS is neutral, adding that – if he is an obstacle to the television “returning to the people” – that obstacle is “resolved in one day.”

Bujošević assessed that RTS is neutral and was the only place, or almost the only place, where actors from both sides could talk, present their views, and a place from which no journalist slandered or attacked either of those sides with false accusations.

As he said, the need for the public media service to be neutral is not understood by a large part of the people within the television itself “who have very clearly politically aligned themselves and are working very clearly politically.”

Commenting on the student blockades of RTS, Bujošević pointed out that initially everyone normal could support the students’ demands, but that, in fact, the hidden goal of these protests was to overthrow the government.

“And this has now been confirmed by some professors in the teaching and scientific councils, although, as we know, the law prohibits engaging in politics at universities. This has now also been formulated by some of the plenums with a proposal for students to go to the elections, to have their own electoral list,” Bujošević stated.

The Editor-in-Chief of the Information Program, Nenad Lj. Stefanović, said that it is absolutely clear that the blockade of RTS had nothing to do with the election of new members of the Council of the Regulatory Body for Electronic Media and added that the blockade of RTS turned into a “hostage crisis.”

Both assessed that there is an idea that power cannot be taken without taking over RTS.

Asked about the request of the President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, for RTS to “return to the citizens,” Bujošević said that it is customary in the world for journalists to talk about politicians, and here politicians talk about journalists, and that this is a situation that is “not the most natural,” but that – if he is an obstacle to the television “returning to the people” – “the obstacle is resolved in one day.”

Stefanović said that he sees the dissatisfaction of the President of Serbia with the editorial policy of RTS.

He added that he does not have a clear idea of what “returning to the people” would look like.

Speaking about the warrants against certain RTS editors, Stefanović said that it is not important who posted them, but that he expected the students to distance themselves from it.

“I know that the students said that it did not come from them, and I would like that to be the case, but they could have distanced themselves,” Stefanović stated.

As he said, he does not think that the criticisms against RTS from both sides are unjustified, but that RTS tries to respect the legitimacy of different opinions on the public scene.

Bujošević also said that no one called the students Nazis and that RTS will file a report against those who “fabricated that kind of lie.”

“The methods were mentioned, that’s right, why wouldn’t you warn about that. I don’t see anything wrong with that,” Bujošević said, adding that he was not happy that this formulation appeared in one show.

He assessed that in Serbia, without a public service, things cannot get better, only worse, because then there will only be room for attacks everywhere, and attacks without arguments.
