The greatest tennis player of all time, Novak Djokovic, was labeled an underdog ahead of his Australian Open semifinal match against Jannik Sinner, but he defeated Sinner in five grueling sets. The lesson was not learned—bookmakers have once again underestimated the best Serbian athlete, giving him slim chances of victory against Carlos Alcaraz.
Djokovic and Alcaraz will battle for the title at the first Grand Slam tournament of the season on Sunday starting at 9:30 a.m., and the Spanish tennis player holds a significant advantage. Despite the fact that Djokovic has won the Melbourne tournament 10 times, bookmakers believe that the current world No. 1 has far greater chances of lifting the trophy.
Thus, the odds on Carlos Alcaraz are as low as 1.35—meaning that a bet of 100 dinars would return just 135 dinars. On the other hand, the odds on Djokovic are around 3.5, which would bring a return of 350 dinars on a 100-dinar stake. It’s not quite like the semifinal, when odds on Djokovic went as high as 10, but it is still undervaluing the greatest of all time.
Novak Djokovic will once again have additional motivation, and we know that he plays some of the best matches of his career precisely when many write him off and give him minimal chances of winning. A triumph in Melbourne would be spectacular—by winning the trophy, Novak would claim his 25th Grand Slam title.
