In the early morning hours in central Moscow, a bomb attack occurred in which one police officer was killed and two were injured.
The explosion echoed shortly after midnight in the square near Savyolovsky railway station, one of the main transport hubs in the northern part of the Russian capital, reports The Guardian.
According to a statement by the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs published on Telegram, the attacker approached traffic police officers who were sitting in a patrol vehicle, after which an explosive device was activated. One officer was killed at the scene in the blast, while two sustained injuries. The attacker himself also died in the explosion.
The state news agency TASS reported that the patrol vehicle was the target of the attack and was severely damaged, but did not catch fire. Local media published photographs of cars with shattered windows near the railway tracks. Police immediately cordoned off the wider area, and multiple emergency medical teams arrived at the scene.
The Ministry initially stated that the attacker had fled, but shortly afterward, following an inspection of the site and surveillance footage, it was confirmed that his body had been found at the location of the explosion. For now, there is no official information about the type of explosive used or the possible motive for the attack.

The Russian Investigative Committee has launched an investigation on suspicion of attempted murder of law enforcement officers and illegal possession of explosive devices.
This attack comes at a time of heightened security tensions in Russia. In December last year, two police officers were killed in an explosion in southern Moscow while attempting to stop a suspicious individual, not far from the place where a Russian general had been killed several days earlier.
During Russia’s four-year war against Ukraine, a series of assassinations of Russian military officials on Russian territory has been recorded. Earlier this month, a senior officer of Russia’s military intelligence service was wounded by gunfire in an attack for which Moscow blamed Kyiv.
