Iran executed three men convicted of killing police officers during the January protests, marking the first executions linked to the unrest.
Authorities claim that Mehdi Gasemi, Saleh Mohamadi, and Said Davudi were sentenced for “waging war against God” and collaborating with Israel and the U.S., while human rights organizations say the verdicts followed unfair trials and coerced confessions.
Particular attention has focused on the case of 19-year-old wrestler Mohamadi.
According to Amnesty International, he was denied proper legal defense and was forced to admit guilt in an expedited process that, the organization says, did not resemble a fair trial.
The Norway-based NGO Iran Human Rights stated that all three men were sentenced to death after an unjust trial, relying on confessions extracted under torture.
Reports note that Mohamadi had just turned 19 last week.

Human rights groups warn that amid the conflict with Israel and the U.S., there could be a wave of mass executions intended to intimidate the population.
The day before, Iran executed a dual Iranian-Swedish citizen accused of spying for Israel.
The protests, which began over economic problems, escalated into massive anti-government demonstrations, and according to human rights organizations, thousands were killed in the crackdown. Authorities have stated there will be no mercy for those convicted.
