Surgical clinics in Skopje reported a difficult New Year’s Eve, with a significantly higher number of injuries compared to previous years. Doctors pointed out that a large portion of the cases were linked to alcohol consumption.
The most severe incident involved the admission of a two-year-old child to the intensive care unit with a gunshot wound to the head. The child’s identity and the circumstances of the injury have not yet been officially confirmed, according to Macedonian media.
The child is in critical condition, as is a 30-year-old man who was found after falling from a height in the Bunjakovec area; he underwent immediate emergency spinal surgery.
The case was confirmed by the Minister of Internal Affairs of North Macedonia, Panče Toškovski. “A two-year-old child was seriously injured and is in life-threatening condition. It involves a metal fragment, but at this moment, we cannot say with certainty exactly how the injury occurred,” he said at a press conference.
Toškovski also stated that one person was killed and another seriously injured in an incident that took place in the Skopje Old Bazaar (Čaršija). The victim is a Turkish citizen, and the murder was committed with a “cold weapon” (a blade/knife).
