Former US President, 82-year-old Joseph Biden, has been diagnosed with prostate cancer that has spread to his bones, his office announced on May 18.

Biden, who left office in January, received the diagnosis on May 16 after visiting a doctor last week due to urinary tract pain.

The report states that it is an aggressive and rapidly spreading cancer, but doctors are optimistic and say that the cancer is hormone-sensitive, “which allows for effective treatment.”

Current US President Donald Trump said that he and Melania were saddened by the news and wished Biden a speedy recovery.

“We send our warmest and best wishes to his wife Jill and the entire family, and we wish Joe a speedy and successful recovery,” Trump wrote on his platform Truth Social.

Biden’s recovery was also wished by former US President and party ally Barack Obama, former US Vice President and Democratic candidate in the previous election Kamala Harris, as well as British Prime Minister Kir Starmer.

A year ago, Biden was forced to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race due to widespread concerns within the Democratic Party about his overall health and age.

Biden initially rejected the idea of not running in the November presidential election.

However, after the debacle in the televised debate with Trump in June 2024, criticism against him grew, and he then changed his mind and left Kamala Harris to fight Trump.

Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer among men after skin cancer, according to research.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 13 out of every 100 men will develop prostate cancer at some point in their lives.

Age is the most common risk factor, the CDC says.

In February 2024, Buckingham Palace announced that British King Charles III had “a type of cancer.”

During a recent treatment for an enlarged prostate, the king was diagnosed with cancer, although it was not prostate cancer, Buckingham Palace announced at the time.

Since officially leaving the White House in January, handing over the position to Trump, Biden has rarely appeared in public.

The former president gave a speech in April at a conference of an organization for people with disabilities in Chicago.

In May, he gave an interview to the BBC, his first since leaving the White House, in which he said that the decision to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race was “difficult.”

Biden has faced questions about his health in recent months.

On the television show The View in May, Biden denied claims that he had experienced cognitive decline in his last year in the White House.

For many years, Biden has advocated for cancer research.

He and his wife Jill relaunched a preventative screening initiative in 2022 to prevent more than four million cancer deaths by 2047.

Biden’s eldest son, Bo, died of brain cancer in 2015.
