At least seven explosions echoed today in Venezuela’s capital, Caracas.
Aircraft are flying over the city at low altitude, AP reports.
Smoke is rising over the city, and the area around a military base in the southern part of Caracas has been left without electricity, Reuters reports, citing statements from eyewitnesses at the scene.
People across the city ran out into the streets to see what was happening, AP reports.
Today’s incidents come just a day after Venezuela announced that it was open to negotiations on an agreement with the United States to combat drug trafficking.

U.S. forces have been carrying out strikes since September on vessels they claim originate from Venezuela and are transporting narcotics.
Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro accuses Washington of wanting to carry out a change of government in Venezuela and gain access to its vast oil reserves through a months-long pressure campaign that began with the massive deployment of military forces in the Caribbean Sea in August.
