In the traditional swimming for the Holy Cross in Serbia, on the occasion of the Christian holiday of Epiphany, an official of the US Embassy in Belgrade participated for the first time today – the head of the Office of Defense Cooperation, Daniel O’Connor.
O’Connor swam for the Epiphany cross in Zemun, thus becoming the first American soldier to participate in this traditional event in Serbia, the Beta agency was told at the US Embassy in Belgrade.
O’Connor, who has been in Serbia for almost three years, pointed out that he made the decision to swim for the Holy Cross out of a desire to get to know Serbian culture and tradition more deeply, stating that this event represents a sincere and direct way of connecting with the Serbian people. According to him, it was through such experiences that he realized how similar Serbs and Americans are in the values they cherish.
“Love for family, God, and the fatherland – these are the things we have in common and which are truly the most important,” O’Connor told Radio Television of Serbia, expressing hope that precisely such values can further bring the two nations closer in the future.
Swimming for the Holy Cross on the Zemun quay gathered a large number of participants and citizens again this year.
