The Dean of the Faculty of Philosophy, Natalija Jovanović, was attacked with a knife by a woman in Niš. The attacker was later taken into custody by the police.
This information was first reported by N1, while Nova.rs confirmed that Jovanović was transported by an ambulance and is currently on her way to the Emergency Center.
Eyewitness Accounts
Eyewitnesses told N1 that the attacker was a woman and that she was heard threatening to throw acid on Jovanović before attacking her with a knife.
Bystanders helped the dean take cover in a betting shop and reported that she sustained injuries. Shortly after, she entered an ambulance for medical attention.
One eyewitness stated that the attacker was part of a group.
“I saw a knife flash in her hand. First, she threw a can at us,” the witness said.
Previous Attack on February 7
This is not the first attack on Dean Jovanović. She was verbally and physically assaulted during a protest in Niš on February 7, when she was confronted by an elderly woman.
“The woman first attacked the students in front of Južna Morava. I approached to protect them. Later, on Bulevar Nemanjića, she physically assaulted me, got in my face, started cursing and threatening: ‘We will kill you’ and ‘You will pay for everything.’ She then began searching for something in her bag, but my colleague, Professor Ivan Jovanović, intervened, pushing her away along with student security,” she recounted.
After the incident, Jovanović went to the police station, where she fell ill and was taken to the Cardiology Clinic for treatment.
Support for Student Protests
Dean Jovanović was one of the first university leaders in Serbia to support student demands. Her Faculty of Philosophy in Niš was the first to open its doors to students participating in the blockade.
