The United States of America has issued a new general license that temporarily allows the sale of Russian crude oil and petroleum products that were loaded onto ships by April 11, it was announced on the website of the U.S. Department of the Treasury.
U.S. Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent stated on the X network that the measure is aimed at preserving the stability of the global energy market and maintaining lower energy prices at a time of increased instability.
According to him, the temporary authorization allows countries to purchase Russian oil that is already in transit and currently at sea, in order to increase the availability of existing supply on the world market.
Bessent stated that this is a narrowly limited and short-term measure that applies exclusively to oil that has already been shipped, assessing that it will not bring significant financial benefit to the Russian government, because it generates most of its revenue from the energy sector through taxes calculated at the place of extraction.
He added that the energy policy of the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump has brought oil and gas production in the United States to record levels, which has contributed to lower fuel prices for American consumers.
Bessent also assessed that the recent increase in oil prices is a temporary market disturbance which, as he stated, could bring benefits to the American economy in the long term.
