Thanksgiving is a holiday celebrated in the United States of America on the fourth Thursday of November, and it is special because it connects culture, gastronomy, and sports into one big traditional celebration of togetherness for family and friends.

We often encounter, especially in movies and TV series, images of cheerful families gathered around a rich table full of traditional food.

Thanksgiving has become the most important holiday in the United States of America after Christmas.

The American Thanksgiving roots go back to the first English settlers as a celebration of different cultures. Upon arriving in America, the English settlers established equality among themselves and adopted the common name Pilgrims; however, their happiness was soon clouded by difficulties in obtaining food.

They were saved by the local Indians, who provided them with food and taught them to grow corn and vegetables, and also invited them to a meal where, according to tradition, they ate lobster, pecan nuts, cabbage, goat cheese, and squash together.

That day is considered the first American Thanksgiving today.

According to tradition, roasted turkey large enough to feed the whole family is invariably served during the evening. According to some estimates, about 46 million turkeys, or 243 million kilograms of turkey meat, are eaten in America that evening, and all of this is accompanied by appetizers and desserts – stuffing, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, pies, and other dishes – the average American consumes more than 4,500 calories during the traditional dinner.

Mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, and pumpkin pie are most often served with turkey. Regional favorites include cornbread in the South, squash dishes in New England, and salad in California and other western states.
