New footage has emerged showing a physical confrontation between Aleks Preti and federal agents more than a week before agents of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) shot and killed him. A representative of Preti’s family confirmed that the man in the video, which was released last night, is indeed Preti, CNN reports.

In the footage, published by the digital outlet The News Movement, Preti can be seen shouting at agents and kicking the rear taillight of their vehicle as they drive away. The agents then stop the vehicle, get out, and knock Preti to the ground.

The entire incident in Minneapolis lasts only a few seconds, after which Preti gets back up. He appears to have a pistol tucked into his waistband, but it is unclear whether the agents noticed it. They do not disarm him, but instead retreat and leave. It is not known what happened immediately before and after the moment captured in the footage, CNN reports.

Dressed Similarly to the Day He Was Killed

The News Movement released the footage after reviewing material recorded in the city by demonstrators and federal agents, 11 days before Preti’s killing. The video was recorded at a location less than three kilometers from where Preti was later fatally shot.

In the footage, Preti is wearing a brown hat, a brown jacket, a light-colored hooded sweatshirt, and beige pants — clothing similar to what he was wearing on the day he was killed.

Family Attorney: Nothing Can Justify the Killing

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) told CNN that it is reviewing the released footage.

“One week before Aleks was shot on the street, despite posing no threat to anyone, a group of ICE agents violently attacked him,” Steve Schleicher, the Preti family’s attorney, told CNN. “Nothing that happened in the days leading up to this can justify the fact that ICE killed Aleks on January 24.”

Previous Incidents

CNN previously reported that Preti, a 37-year-old medical technician employed in an intensive care unit, had an encounter with federal agents approximately a week before his death and was known to federal authorities. According to CNN sources, he suffered a broken rib when a group of federal officers knocked him to the ground as he protested their attempt to detain other individuals.

It is unclear whether that encounter is the same one recorded by The News Movement. DHS said in a statement on Tuesday that “this incident was not documented.”

A Minneapolis resident told local media that on January 13 he saw a demonstrator kick the rear taillight of an ICE vehicle and then be knocked to the ground by agents during a clash between bystanders, demonstrators, and federal agents.

“It was a really powerful kick,” witness Andy Larson told the Sahan Journal.
