The United States Department of Justice (USA) announced that Ljirim Suljejmani (49), an Albanian from AP Kosovo and Metohija who also holds US citizenship, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison by a US District Court for membership in the terrorist organization Islamic State (ISIS).

According to the US ministry’s statement published on June 2, Suljejmani, also known as Abu Sulayman al-Kosovi, pleaded guilty on December 12 to undergoing military training in the organization, which is characterized as terrorist.

Regarding this, federal judge Rudolf Contreras handed down the sentence on June 2 and ordered that Suljejmani be under lifetime supervision after serving his sentence.

“Suljejmani will spend a decade in prison reflecting on the betrayal he committed against this country. Anyone who thinks ISIS is the solution should think again. We will go to great lengths to stop any individual who aims to harm our citizens,” said Prosecutor Piro, as stated in the announcement.

According to documents available to the US ministry, Suljejmani arrived in Syria in November 2015 with his family, where he lived until 2019. During that period, he underwent 21 days of military training, during which he learned to use weapons such as AK-47s, M-16s, and hand grenades. He was then deployed to a battalion in Mosul, Iraq.

It is also added that he pledged allegiance to the former ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi and participated in the battle for Manbij against US-led coalition forces in May 2016.

Suljejmani and his family were captured by coalition forces on February 27, 2019, while they were in Baghouz, the last ISIS stronghold.

After his arrest, Suljejmani was held in Dashisha prison under the supervision of the Syrian Democratic Forces, and then on September 15, 2020, he was handed over to US authorities to face justice.

The statement emphasizes that the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Forces worked on the case and that Suljejmani was prosecuted by federal prosecutors from the National Security Division.
