Due to a Ukrainian drone attack, a fire broke out at the Shatura State Power Plant located 130 km from the center of Moscow, the Interfax agency reported.

“Early this morning, a drone attack was carried out on the Shatura State District Power Plant. Some of the drones were destroyed by air defense forces, and several parts fell onto the plant’s territory. A fire broke out at the facility, which has been contained, and emergency services continue their work,” stated the governor of the Moscow region, Andrei Vorobyov.

He emphasized that the electricity supply to Moscow was not interrupted, as the system switched to backup lines.

During the night of November 23, the Ukrainian military carried out an attack on the Shaturinskaya thermal power plant in the Moscow region, Russian Telegram channels also reported.

On social media, alleged footage appeared showing a massive explosion and fire at the power plant after the projectile hit the target.

Where is the thermal power plant located?

The Shaturinskaya thermal power plant is located about 120 kilometers east of Moscow, on the outskirts of the Moscow region, and is one of the oldest and largest facilities for generating electricity and heat in Russia, supplying the wider Moscow region.

Earlier in the night, the mayor of Moscow, Sergei Sobyanin, announced that two Ukrainian drones were shot down on their way to the capital.

Rosaviatsiya, the Russian aviation agency, also announced that Zhukovsky Airport had temporarily suspended operations due to the presence of drones in the region.

Ukrainian attacks on military and industrial infrastructure

Ukraine regularly carries out attacks on military and industrial facilities in Russia and on territories controlled by Russian forces, relying primarily on domestic drones. There is currently no available information on the scale of the damage or possible casualties.

Mutual attacks on energy infrastructure

The attack comes at a time when Kyiv has intensified strikes on Russian oil, gas, and energy infrastructure, which represents a key source of revenue for Moscow in the war in Ukraine.

In recent months, Moscow has also ramped up attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure in an attempt to push the country back into a severe winter crisis.

Russians shot down Ukrainian drones

Russian air defense systems shot down 75 Ukrainian drones overnight across nine Russian regions, the Russian Ministry of Defense reported today.

The statement notes that 36 of those drones were shot down over the Black Sea and two over the Moscow region, Interfax reported.

Additionally, drones were downed over Crimea, Bryansk region, Voronezh region, Smolensk region, Belgorod region, Kaluga region, Ryazan region, and Krasnodar Krai.
