A NEW VERDICT IN THE CASE OF THE CANOPY COLLAPSE: One Of The Victims’ Families Was Awarded Million-Dollar Compensation For Emotional Distress!

The Higher Court in Novi Sad ruled that Infrastructure of Serbian Railways must pay 13 million dinars each to plaintiffs R.Z. and R.Z. for sustained emotional distress due to the death of a close person in the canopy collapse, as well as one million dinars each for sustained fear.

“The Higher Court in Novi Sad on 20.10.2025 rendered a judgment obliging the defendants Stock Company for managing public railway infrastructure ‘Infrastruktura železnice Srbije’ Belgrade and the Republic of Serbia to jointly pay to the plaintiffs R.Z. and R.Z. the amount of 13,000,000.00 dinars each in the name of compensation for non-material damage for sustained emotional distress due to the death of a close person, as well as the amount of 1,000,000.00 dinars each in the name of compensation for non-material damage for sustained fear, with legal default interest starting from 20.10.2025 until payment, within 15 days of receiving the written dispatch of the judgment, under the threat of compulsory execution, while the stated claim for relief was rejected as unfounded up to the amount requested in the remaining part on both grounds,” the statement said.

By the same judgment, it is added, the defendants were obliged to jointly compensate the plaintiffs for the costs of the litigation with legal default interest starting from the date of finality until final payment, within 15 days of receiving the written dispatch of the judgment, under the threat of compulsory execution.

An appeal against this judgment is possible to the Appellate Court in Novi Sad.

Let us recall, the first such judgment was rendered in July based on the lawsuit of B.R., B.P., and I.R., and the Infrastructure was then obliged to pay the amount of 5,000,000 dinars each, and to plaintiff M.R. the amount of 4,500,000 dinars, all with legal default interest.

16 people were killed and one was seriously injured – left with severe disability – when the canopy of the Novi Sad Railway Station collapsed on November 1 last year.
